CMA CGM Invests Another $434 Million to Expand Red Sea Port Footprint
During the Saudi-French Investment Roundtable, CMA CGM Group and Saudi terminal operator Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) signed an agreement in Paris to jointly expand Jeddah Islamic Port on the Red Sea, with a total project investment of approximately $434 million. The project will be implemented in partnership with the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) and stands as one of the largest foreign direct investments in Saudi Arabia's maritime sector.

The expansion will involve the construction of a new modern container terminal within RSGT's existing concession area. Upon completion, Jeddah Islamic Port's annual container handling capacity will increase by approximately 2.6 million TEU, bringing the port's total throughput capacity from the current 6.2 million TEU to roughly 8.8 million TEU. The project includes the construction of new deep-water berths capable of accommodating the world's largest container vessels, along with advanced terminal automation technology and 10 new ship-to-shore cranes.

RSGT regards its Jeddah operations terminal as its flagship project, describing it as the largest and most technologically advanced container terminal in the Red Sea region, handling approximately 40% of Saudi Arabia's container throughput.
The two companies stated that the expansion will significantly enhance productivity, operational efficiency, and service reliability for customers across Saudi Arabia and the surrounding region. The upgraded maritime infrastructure will strengthen Jeddah Islamic Port's ability to serve large vessels and major international shipping lanes, helping to expand trade volumes, reinforce global connectivity, and provide more efficient access to international markets for Saudi imports and exports. The project also consolidates the long-term partnership among Mawani, RSGT, and CMA CGM Group.
Furthermore, the project will provide the necessary capacity reserve to meet Saudi Arabia's growing trade demands and further solidify the port's competitive position along one of the world's key shipping corridors. The new deep-water berths will efficiently accommodate the next generation of ultra-large container vessels, helping to attract and retain core shipping route services, increase cargo transshipment volumes, and enhance the connectivity of Saudi enterprises with global markets.
Red Sea Gateway Terminal is Saudi Arabia's first privately invested terminal operator. In addition to its container business, RSGT also operates a Multi-Purpose Terminal (MPT) business unit, managing non-containerized cargo at four strategic locations along the Red Sea coast, covering categories including roll-on/roll-off, general cargo, dry bulk, liquid bulk, and live animals.
