Buys 2 More Chemical Tankers! Germany’s Ernst Russ Accelerates Diversification
On September 9, Germany’s Ernst Russ officially announced that it would purchase two more 18,500 dwt chemical tankers built at Wuhu Shipyard, increasing its tanker fleet to six vessels and continuing its diversification strategy.

Specifically, according to tracking reports by Shipping World Network, on April 15, the Hamburg-based German shipowner announced the purchase of four 18,500 dwt chemical tankers. The first vessel is expected to be delivered in the third quarter, the second by the end of 2026, and the last two in the first and second quarters of 2027. On September 9, Ernst Russ announced the purchase of two additional sister ships, bringing its 18,500 dwt chemical tanker fleet to six.
Ernst Russ said the 18,500 dwt chemical tankers are positioned in the high-end, green and intelligent segment, featuring methanol dual-fuel-ready design, Ice Class 1B strengthening and Great Lakes operation. To address the core pain point of multi-cargo transport, they are equipped with 12 high-quality MarineLINE-coated tanks and can simultaneously carry multiple cargoes, including crude oil, chemicals and vegetable oils, offering flexible adaptability across multiple cargo categories.

Ernst Russ disclosed that the above two vessels have secured charters with Cargill for at least three years. In addition, the four vessels purchased earlier have secured charters of at least five years. This deliberately staggered arrangement will facilitate future renewal negotiations and ensure flexibility.
Joseph Schuchmann, Co-CEO and Chief Commercial Officer of Ernst Russ, said that with the expansion of the tanker division, Ernst Russ continues to adhere to its growth strategy. The tanker market remains a sector with structural attractiveness and long-term value-creation potential.
In addition, Ernst Russ recently completed the sale of the 2008-built container ship “EF Emira” (1,710 TEU).
Ernst Russ raises full-year 2026 guidance
Meanwhile, Ernst Russ raised its full-year 2026 guidance, expecting full-year EBIT of between €55 million and €65 million (previously €45 million to €55 million), and revenue of between €150 million and €160 million.
Dr. Christopher Eilers, Co-CEO and CFO of Ernst Russ AG, said the upward revision to full-year EBIT was mainly due to the sale of the “EF Emma.”
