The Italian grassroots trade union confederation Unione Sindacale di Base (USB) has called a 24-hour strike in Italy’s port industry nationwide on September 28. The action covers the country’s entire port sector and may affect port operations in various locations.

USB said the strike aims to support the recognition of port work as arduous work under the pension system and to push the Ministry of Labor to convene the relevant technical committee. The union also explicitly opposes proposed changes to port legislation, opposes the use of temporary employment agencies in port operations, and calls for urgent measures to protect workers’ wages and purchasing power.

Terminal operators warned that the actual impact of the strike remains uncertain. At the PSA SECH terminal in the Port of Genoa, the stoppage is expected to last from 00:30 on September 28 to 00:29 on September 29. The PSA Genoa PRA terminal has announced a similar impact. Relevant shipping, logistics, and port companies should closely monitor the latest notices from individual terminals.

Meanwhile, other unions, including the European Confederation of Workers’ Unions (CSLE) and the International Confederation of Independent Trade Unions (FI-SI), have called a general strike across Italy on October 2. Railway workers plan to stop work between 11:00 and 14:00 local time. The action is expected to cause serious disruption to rail services, road traffic, and public life.
