In August, container throughput at the Port of Los Angeles reached 956,000 TEU, down 0.3% year on year. Loaded imports fell 0.8% year on year to 500,000 TEU, while loaded exports decreased 9.3% to 116,000 TEU. In addition, the number of empty containers moving through the Port of Los Angeles increased 4.2% year on year to 340,000 TEU.

In the first eight months of 2026, container cargo volume at the Port of Los Angeles reached 7.039 million TEU, up 1.5% year on year.

Notably, after surpassing 1 million TEU in June, the Port of Los Angeles handled 960,000 TEU in July and 956,000 TEU in August, with the three-month total exceeding 2.91 million TEU—its busiest summer on record.

Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, said, “The Port of Los Angeles has had an exceptionally strong summer.”

He noted, “Resilient consumer demand, early holiday shipments and a broad mix of cargo all contributed to this strong performance.”

He added, “As we enter the final months of the year, momentum is strong. September is expected to be another strong month, and as the global trade landscape continues to evolve, the Port of Los Angeles is well positioned to respond.”
